About – The Publisher & The Publications
Susan is the former co-publisher and creator of the T.I.P. Resource Guide (originally entitled The Designer’s Fabric & Trim Resource Guide), By The Yard Fabric & Trim Sourcing Guide, and Sourcing News. The original book title published in 1988, was the first comprehensive guide to the New York City Garment Center. In 1996, Power sold her interest in T.I.P. to a former partner – to pursue other publishing opportunities. She then formed Dare Communications. Shortly after, T.I.P.’s new owners ceased publication of all titles – Power realized that there was again a need for sourcing information. She produced a new publication - The Designer’s Guide is a comprehensive detailed guide for large and small manufacturers who need to buy fabric and trim from companies who make to order or stock items with flexible/lower minimums. The Designer’s Guide is updated quarterly. An additional guide – Textile Sources Who’s Who highlights American & Canadian mills, converters, importers of textiles – plus agents.
An updated version of the original title By The Yard was brought back in print in the Summer of 2009. By The Yard Resource Guide lists wholesale resources for fabric & trim with very low minimums. Also in the Spring of 2009 a new title The Contractors was introduced. This guide provides resources for pre-production services, includes cut & sew contractors, knitters, & finishing specialists – including printers!
The newest title The Sourcer’s Guide (the all in one-guide!) is a compilation of information included in the By The Yard Guide, Designer’s Guide, Textile Sources Who’s Who, and The Contractors. Plus, additional resources for Fabrics, Trims, Yarns, Fiber Producers, and Service Providers, including Trade Organizations/Associations.
In 2005, Power established The Resource Room – a sourcing center featuring an all fibers, all fabrics, & trimming library in the New York City Garment Center, facing Bryant Park South. The Gibbs school closed in 2010 – new locations for the resource room are being considered. Meanwhile, AboutSources has a traveling resource library at textile shows across the USA.
In addition to publishing in-print and on-line, Power is a fashion/textile industry consultant – and produces seminars/conferences. Prior to founding T.I.P., her experience includes marketing, sales, and design of apparel & textiles.
